Although the building is not listed, local historians wanted to highlight its importance by sponsoring a blue plaque for the site.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds Coun Judith Elliott unveiled the plaque at a ceremony attended by Wortley Local History Society.

Dr Kevin Grady, Director of Leeds Civic Trust, said: "The Trust is delighted to join with the people of Wortley in celebrating the former Grammar School with a blue plaque.

"Though not especially prepossessing, the building is an important reminder of the long history of Wortley and some of the important people who grew up there and went on to achieve great things."

The Grammar School closed in 1909 but the Georgian school building erected in 1814 still stands.

After its closure, the building was sold to a blacksmith before going on to be used as an engineering works, a bakery and a builders before being restored to be used as offices by Kath Wells Estate Agent.
