Viki Bailey also had a go at growing her own food as she got stuck in at B.Whiteley Farm and Nursery in Pudsey.

The 23-year-old will be vying for the Miss England title next month when she goes head-to-head with 53 other finalists from across the country.

She got her hands dirty to stress the importance of reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill as part of national Recycle Week which runs until Sunday.

Viki told Wortley Today: "Everyone should be doing their bit to help protect the environment and recycling and composting are simple, everyday ways we can look after Leeds."

Food waste makes up a third of the weight of most black wheeled bins in Leeds which ends up in landfill. When squashed under other waste, organic matter such as carrot peelings and chicken skin don't break down properly.

Instead it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Composting is a greener way of disposing of food scraps turning items such as egg shells, potato peelings, tea bags and banana skins into fertiliser for growing fruit, vegetables and plants.

* To get a subsidised home compost bin visit: www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 076 0223 quoting 'reference Loop'.

The offer is available until September 30.
