Bramley man who got girl pregnant has sentence reduced
A martial arts expert from Bramley who was jailed for two years after getting an underage girl pregnant has had his sentence cut by six months at the Court of Appeal in London.
Wayne Gary Frew, 29, of Fairfield Road in Bramley, admitted sexual activity with the 15-year-old at the city's Crown Court and was sent to prison in February.
But Frew has now been granted a reduction in his sentence by three judges who agreed that the two-year term was 'manifestly excessive' in the circumstances.
Frew, a blackbelt martial artist, now faces an 18-month sentence, of which he should serve nine months behind bars.
Mr Justice David Clarke said the sex between the pair, although a serious offence, was consensual and so did not justify a two-year sentence. The girl had also been just months from her 16th birthday.
The offence was aggravated by the fact that the girl became pregnant and was forced to undergo a painful and distressing abortion procedure due to her late reporting of the pregnancy.
Allowing the appeal, the judge said: "In all the circumstances, we consider that the proper sentence for this offence was 18 months and the length of the prison sentence will reduced accordingly."
