A councillor has called for an investigation into why Leeds City Council has been cutting grass in the middle of the night after more complaints from angry residents.
The YEP revealed earlier this month how people in Bramley are suffering sleepless nights by the noise of council workmen who have been ordered to cut grass at 3am.
Now Pudsey Labour councillor Richard Lewis has demanded an inquiry into why the dec
ision was made after elderly residents of a sheltered housing complex and tower block tenants have also come forward to complain.
Brian Falkingham, secretary of Rycroft residents association, said residents were woken at 2am by the sound of machinery cutting grass along the Stanningley Bypass.
He said: "I thought at first that there was a helicopter hovering over our flats. When the noise wouldn't go away I looked out and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
"A lot of people in these high-rise blocks were woken up and it caused a lot of upset to the elderly residents in Rycroft Green Sheltered Housing Complex.
"Some of them are quite fragile and were very frightened by the disturbance. They are worried about it happening again."
The council has said the decision to cut the grass overnight was made due to health and safety reasons after speaking to police, highways officials and bus operators.
Coun Lewis said: "The residents are understandably very upset about being woken in the early hours.
"Unfortunately Leeds City Council seems to have completely forgotten that people actually live in the vicinity of Stanningley Bypass and may not want to be rudely awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by the sounds of a petrol mower.
"The excuse given by the council is pathetic. There is no reason why they could not have scheduled this work for early evenings.
"I know that Leeds is touted as a 24 hour city but this is ridiculous. You shouldn't have to choose between a good night's sleep which we are all entitled to or grass cutting,
"I want assurances from Leeds City Council that this will never happen again."
A Council spokesman said no further comment would be made on the issue.
Another councillor also complained recently after people in Swinnow were woken by grass cutting at around 2am.
