Is this Leeds's youngest head teacher? Ten-year-old Caitlin Lawton took the hot seat at Whitecote Primary in Bramley showing VIPs around the school and holding an assembly.

Meanwhile, her classmates performed duties ranging from catering manager to IT technician, and even taught a physics lesson.

The eye-opening day for the youngsters was part of a national campaign called 11 Million Takeover Day in which pupils were encouraged to help run their schools.

After usual head Karen Allan stood down for a few hours, Caitlin's duties included overseeing a visit by local MP John Battle, who opened three new rooms, including a well-resourced ICT suite.

"That was the best bit, showing Mr Battle around," said Caitlin, who was referred to as "Miss Lawton" for the day.
"I would normally have maths and literacy this morning. It's much more fun being the headteacher."

The day also included a special all-school assembly in which year 5 pupils presented their own potted history of the area.

"The children have really taken charge of today's events, from choosing the music for the assembly to ordering the refreshments," said Ms Allan.

"They have done a wonderful job and we are so proud of them."
Whitecote was among a number of primary schools across the city that took part in the takeover day.
