How many teachers does it take to carry 200 ice creams?
Well, a group from Summerfield Primary in Bramley had a chance to find out when they took their whole school on a day trip to the beach.

The outing to Bridlington was organised by staff at the school as a treat for the youngsters.

The teachers used money saved for their own end of year meal to pay for part of it.

Headteacher Karon Wittmann said the outing had taken months to organise and the planning was like a "military campaign".

But as five coachloads of youngsters descended on Bridlington beach yesterday and the sun shone down as they built sandcastles, it was all worth it.

"It was all about giving the children a positive experience to share," Ms Wittman explained.

"They can then go back to school and talk about it, draw and write about it.

"We take it for granted but we do have some children who have never been to the seaside so it's an extra special experience for them.

"Seeing the children running around enjoying themselves playing with beach balls and building sandcastles is a joy in itself."

As part of the fun, the teachers bought ice cream for all 200 children, paid for by contributions from their own Wednesday morning slimming club.

"We were going to go out for a meal but we never got round to it so we decided to treat the kids instead," Ms Wittmann said.

Year four pupil Harry Bailey, nine, said: "The best thing is building sandcastles and being on the beach with all my friends.

"I am going to write all about it when we go back to school."

Grace Stephenson, 10, said: "It's been really fun because the whole school is here. We have a section of beach of our own and we are playing games."

And Paige Marie Foster, six, said she was loving being at the seaside and making "lots and lots of new friends and paddling in the sea and making sandcastles."
