Head teacher at Swinnow Primary School in Bramley, Allison Chin said: "We were looking at how we could make the curriculum more exciting for the children – things that are activity based which will stimulate their imagination.

"We are looking at history in a different way to make it more exciting. We link writing skills, drama and play."

Ninety of the school's 240 students are taking part in the Indian sessions.

"All the children are dressing up," said Ms Chin. "They will experience going into a tipi – we made the tipi and they have painted it."
She said the method was being applied to other history subjects.

"We did World War Two as a topic and we had music from the 1940s.

"Musicians came in. We are linking creativity to every subject the children do, making it more hands-on."
