The European Super League plans collapsed in a heap on Tuesday evening - but should the Premier League's 'big six' be punished?

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy said the club “regret the anxiety and upset caused by the proposal” while Arsenal apologised for their “mistake” in signing up for the venture.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea were a little more prosaic in confirming they were pulling out of the breakaway league with short statements, but the fallout is unlikely to end there.

Ed Woodward announced he will step down as Manchester United executive vice-chairman by the end of 2021, while pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher called for changes at the top at the Red Devils and Liverpool, the teams they respectively support.

In response to their departures, the Super League announced early on Wednesday morning it is considering “appropriate steps to reshape the project”.

In today's social media talking point, we look at what Whites fans have had to say - and they have been scathing in their verdict for the need to punish the teams involved:

@wayneleedsfan These 6 have to be punished for the sake of integrity and to prevent this from ever happening again. If it’s swept under the carpet by the PL or UEFA the fans need to continue protests until something is done. They can’t be allowed to get away scott free from this attempted coup.

@TheSemp So now this Super League is dead, we now need to discuss punishment for these 'BIG 6'. Points deductions and fines a must for sure, this can never happen again. #lufc #alaw #mot

@TheJackyCalv “The fans don’t deserve a points deduction” When clubs go into administration they get docked points. The fans don’t deserve it then but that’s the rules. This is no different and will teach these charlatans not to do it again. Throw the book at them.

@ashlaurenn_ It’s all well and good these clubs leaving the ESL before it’s began.. but don’t forget, they agreed to do it in the first place and something needs to be done so they can’t again.

@BarneyLUFC21 Leeds are the only club to have played a super league team and unbeaten too. Surely we should get into Europe just for that #lufc

@DJTommyPickles Well it looks like this whole ESL (European Super League) idea is rightly dead. Hopefully a points deduction and hefty fine will be applied to all the teams involved, I seem to recall -15 used to be the in thing....

@SCynic1 When the directors screwed up @LUFC the punishment was points deduction. I didn’t hear any of the Greedy Six say “what about the fans?”. 15 points off. Now. One standard.

@LUFCWilko Those 6 clubs still need serious punishment to ensure nothing like this happens again.

@craigroybrown Right, FA and @premierleague. @LUFC got fined 200k for having a guy in the bush. What punishment for @LFC, @ManCity, @ManUtd, @ChelseaFC, @SpursOfficial, @Arsenal? Points deductions, fines, and make an example of them for trying to destroy our game. #SuperLeagueOut

@mjgarrity72 If LUFC were punished for watching a training session, what’s the punishment for this? #SuperLeague
