Jesse Marsch has refused to make an excuse of Leeds United's failure to buy a striker in the summer, as their struggle to finish chances goes on.

A winless run of eight games will accompany Marsch and his men to Anfield on Saturday night, where goalscoring opportunities could come at a premium. While any game at the home of a Champions League club like Liverpool might be considered a free hit, Marsch is currently facing mounting pressure over the Whites' form and fans called for his and the board's removal during the 3-2 defeat by Fulham.

One of the issues currently haunting Marsch and Leeds is their wastefulness in front of goal and it has not helped the head coach's cause that Patrick Bamford is yet to complete a single 90 minute outing this season. The club's number nine is also yet to score a goal and has missed a number of golden chances to do so in recent defeats. He had barely stepped on the pitch against Fulham before being played in on goal, only to be denied by Bernd Leno.

Meanwhile his main competition for the centre-forward role, Rodrigo, has managed five goals without sustaining consistent all-round performances. His opener against the Cottagers on Sunday was his first since the August 21 win over Chelsea and ended a 390-minute wait for that fifth goal. Marsch has been using the pair in tandem, sometimes giving them a half each, because neither has been fit enough or in sufficiently impressive form to nail down the position as their own.

The situation naturally brings into focus, once again, the club's failed attempts to land a striker in the summer transfer window, but Marsch insists there is no blame to attribute and instead the responsibility for the situation the team finds itself in rests solely on his shoulders.

"So we worked hard together to put together a good transfer window and in a lot of ways we did great on it," he said on Sunday.

"I'm not going to start playing hindsight and I'm certainly not going to throw anyone under the bus. I'm looking directly at myself. I'm trying to do my job in this club in my role the best that I can and that's to coach this team and make them better."
