For three weeks a year, this average semi on Whitecote Hill becomes a winter wonderland – inside and out.

Not only is the exterior of the house covered in around 13,000 bulbs, indoors there is a riot of colour with Christmas trees, Santa Clauses and snowmen – to name just a few – in every room.

The doorbell plays Christmas carols, the TV has its own tinsel and even the kitchen sink has been given a festive makeover. It is the third time the Waite family have lit up the night sky by decorating their house for charity.

Daughter Tammy Stone, 21, said the family were obsessed with all things Christmas.

She told the YEP: "My birthday is on Christmas Day so the house has always been a bit mad at this time of year.

"Mum would always go heavy on the decorations! "A while ago we decided to do the outside, too and we thought we would open it up to the public for donations. In the past three years we've raised about £900 for the children's cancer ward at St James's Hospital."

Tammy said LED and low voltage lights kept the family's fuel bills to a minimum – with the Christmas lights adding only an extra £27 to their December bill.

The light show, though, does cost a lot of time and effort, with work starting on the display on November 1.

Tammy, who lives with mum Frances Waite and stepdad Russell, said: It's worth it. I just never get bored of Christmas!"

The house is open until December 23, each weekday between 5pm and 7pm and at weekends from 4.30pm to 8.30pm. Visitors are asked to give a donation.
